The artist Anna Badina has created a series of original drawings in ink, pen and brush, inspired by photographs from Akimitsu Takagi’s collection and the world of traditional Japanese tattooing.
Drawing on three images selected from the book the tattoo writer, the artist has created three original works, now available in a limited edition as Fine Art prints.
Each fine art print is produced using the Giclée Fine Art technique on 240 gsm matt textured fine art paper, made from 100% cotton fibres, and is acid-free and free from optical brighteners. The high-definition printing, carried out using lightfast pigment inks, ensures excellent longevity, deep blacks and a rendering faithful to the original drawings.
The works are available in two sizes:
- 30 × 40 cm
- 50 × 70 cm
This series highlights three iconic scenes from traditional Japanese tattooing.
The first drawing depicts a man being tattooed by Horiuno II on the theme of Tamatori-hime.
The second shows a woman in Horiuno II’s studio, whilst the artist sketches the outline of a dragon’s head with a brush, to be tattooed.
Finally, the third drawing depicts a reclining man whose back, entirely covered in tattoos of two dragons, was created by Horigōro II.
Through this artistic collaboration, Anna Badina revisits the iconography of Japanese tattooing, blending contemporary illustration, hand-drawn art and photographic memory.
