A symposium dedicated to Japanese tattooing will be held on Saturday, September 20, 2025, at Aoyama Gakuin University in the Shibuya district of Tokyo.

Among the invited researchers, Pascal Bagot will present his work on irezumi/horimono, which he began twenty years ago, as well as his more recent research on the photographic archive of Akimitsu Takagi and the related initiatives carried out so far, such as the publication of the book The Tattoo Writer.

Initiated by Marc Menish (Aoyama Gakuin University) and in collaboration with Dominic Steavu (University of California, Santa Barbara), this bilingual one-day symposium will bring together researchers, specialists, and tattoo artists around the world of Japanese tattooing.

The following speakers will present their research: Eric Shahan, Manami Okazaki, Jean Gonzalez, and Dominic Steavu. Tattoo artist Horimomo will give a live demonstration of traditional Japanese hand tattooing, known as tebori.
